As a person who has gone to AOPA/ Fun & Sun FOR Tailwinds to demo the IFT Pro Flight simulator, I can honestly tell you from experience to get the Virtual Pilot PRO yoke! It has the 6 buttons on top, plus 2 hi-hats, throttle, flaps, etc.
With the IFT Pro, you can control all aircraft functions from it, as the software recognizes all the buttons. Other sim's recognize it also. As for Flight Unlimited, I haven't tried it yet. I have it, but haven't found the time. IFT PRO is a very good simulator, $299, that has all the continental database. Combined with the pedals ( your plane has/needs them!) and the Digitized ATC from Jim ($40) that gives you 30 different ATC approaches to 5 airports in YOUR flying area, it is a good simulator to reinforce the PROCEDURES of instrument scan, holding, responding, etc. You can set up the weather/ceiling variables (EASY!) from calm, to +- 10 to +- 100 percent (ie., ceiling at XXX for 1000 ft +- 300 ft, winds 12 knot@268 +- 6 knots).. I tried the ELITE, and IP and IFT Pro, kept the IFT Pro. I got started demonstrating the software/hardware because I was a registered owner for 3 years and used it! It's really good. Roy, the developer, a CFII, developed it because there was no AFFORDABLE, good simulator for him to have his students go practice procedures! At the show prices for the "whole enchilada" (IFT Pro, VP Pro yoke, CH Rudder Pedals, Digitized ATC), it was ~ to 7 hrs of CFII/172 time, to be told "you need to practice your holding procedures, altitude holding,..." , and spend more $ practicing. While it does not give you motion, for practicing procedures, it's great!
I had a 2000+ hr Inst rated pilot shoot the Ft. Lauderdale approach using the real App Plates, good, but he missed acknowledging ATC to contact the tower xxx.xx, and never "keyed" the mike, switched freq's. As he made the approach, I stopped the sim about 20 ft above deck, and asked him WHO cleared him to land? He said ATC,I said no, the last Transmission was to contact tower xxx.xx, he said no, so since I could hit one button to REPLAY the last radio tx, I did, and we all heard ATC tell him to contact tower.
Another pair of pilots (American/Southwest) flew it, and people kept kidding the one about the SLOW approach speed, but after he landed , I displayed the flight profile, and his approach was RIGHT on the 3 degree glide slope line! This was with winds, slight turbulence!! He then invited "us" to fly them for a smooth flight!
I hope this sheds some light on some sim's / hardware.
