Acknowledgments

This work is the result of the help of and consultation with a great number of people. The authors are extremely grateful for this help. We especially thank the American Library Association for the financial support provided by The Whitney-Carnegie Award. Without the many speleobibliophiles who opened their homes and collections to us, this work would not have been possible: Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) for access to its WorldCat database and for permission to supplement the bibliography from their database, Thomas Cromer and Chris Sharpe, Ross A. Ellis, William R. Halliday, Francis G. Howarth, Chris Howes and Judith Calford, Anthony Jarret, Raymond Mansfield, Charles R. Pease, James Quinlan, Bruce W. Rogers, Geary M. and Susan Schindel, Trevor R. Shaw, Elery Hamilton Smith, Gordon L. Smith, Jr., William W. Torode and Gregory and Lynette Tunnock. We thank the National Speleological Society for bringing us all together to work on this project and the Cave Research Foundation for supporting the publication.

We thank George Huppert and Edward Zawlocki for their original inspiration for this project.

The manuscript was finely tuned by the firm and competent hand of Richard A. Watson.

Cataloging consultation was provided by Clare-Lise Benaud, Mary Ellen Hanson, and Todd Hollister, of the Cataloging Department of University of New Mexico General Library.

In addition to the production staff, many individuals helped with the editing of the final manuscript, input annotations, or revised text. We are very appreciative of the work of Kathylyn Beck, Donna Cromer, Richard A. and Jill DesJardins, Thomas D. Engel, James M. and Fredericka H. R. Hardy, Deborah Harrison, J. Michael Queen, and Dena Thomas.
